Pergolesi's MAGNIFICAT at St Eunan's Cathedral


MAGNIFICAT at St. Eunan's Cathedral,
Saturday 11th December, 8.30 pm

Closing the year of celebrations for the 300th Anniversary of Italia composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, the Donegal Chamber Music Society and Co. Donegal VEC Music Education Partnership present the MAGNIFICAT at St. Eunan's Cathedral, Letterkenny. This evening of reflection and music on Saturday 11th December at 8.30pm (after evening mass) will be presented by the Donegal Chamber Orchestra and the Conwal Singers. The guest conductor will be Justo Manuel Jiménez Fábregas, an experienced specialist in choral groups, wind ensembles and orchestral conducting. The performance will also include music by
Vivaldi, Bach, Manfredini and Boyce. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

This event is organized by the Donegal Chamber Music Society and brings to a close a busy year of activities in partnership with the Regional Cultural Centre, Co. Donegal VEC MEP and An Grianan Theatre. Some of this year's highlights: the Concert Series at RCC, the Concerto Málaga performance at An Grianan and the 2nd Cello Meeting Ireland. The Society is looking forward to 2011 and to collaborating with national associations such as Music Network in order to foster the growing appreciation of Classical Music in Donegal.

The Donegal Chamber Orchestra, one of the Co. Donegal VEC ensembles, has enjoyed a very successful year with sold-out concerts at the Errigal Festival, broadcasting programmes in RTE Radio's "Sunday Miscellany" and the opportunity to work with the celebrated Irish composer Ian Wilson through the "Artist in the Community Scheme" -an award facilitated by Create and the Arts Council. Next year the DCO will celebrate 5 years of collaboration with many new projects. The Pergolesi Magnificat will be sung by the Conwal Singers, directed by Graham Harrison. Earlier this year the Singers performed in the RCC, in Vienna and (together with Prof. Desmond Hunter) at the national Culture Night in September.

November Concert

The Regional Cultural Centre and the Donegal Chamber Music Society present the last performance of 2010 of the Szabó-Yélamo Concert Series at RCC.

American flute player Sabrina Hu will join Donegal based Szabó-Yélamo String Duo for “An Evening with Haydn” on Friday 26th November at 8pm.

Sabrina Hu has enjoyed an exciting performing career throughout the U.S. and Europe in many prestigious venues. Upcoming recitals in the current season include performances throughout China, Korea, Ireland, and the U.S. She completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Michigan State University, where she was also a Teaching Assistant. She also obtained a Masters of Music degree in performance from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, and a Bachelor of Music degree in performance from the Mannes College of Music, New York City.
Sabrina is currently based in Dublin, Ireland and teaching at the National University of Ireland in Maynooth. She is also Co-Artistic director of the Walled City Music Festival.

The Szabó-Yélamo String Duo, founded in 2006, comprised Hungarian violinist Orsolya Szabó-Yélamo and Spanish cellist Víctor Yélamo, both professional musicians are extensively involved in music education across the North West, they are members of the ESTA (European String Teacher Association) and they do instrumental tuition with Co. Donegal Music VEC Education Partnership and at the University of Ulster, Magee Campus. As chamber players they perform regularly in Ireland, Hungary and Spain

In this the very first classical music series at RCC the Szabó-Yélamo String Duo in collaboration with local and international classical players have brought to Letterkenny eclectically programmes with music from Corelli to Elgar, from Bach to Debussy. Past artists during this season had been the Donegal Chamber Orchestra, Slovakian violinist Lucia Spacirova, local Double Bass player Michael McGinty, acclaimed international concert organist Desmond Hunter and for the November concert the American flutists Sabrina Hu. From 24th and 27th of June 2010, the Donegal Chamber Music Society with support from Co. Donegal VEC Music Education Partnership and the Regional Cultural Centre, will present the 2nd Cello Meeting, Ireland.

The weekend, based at the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, will feature master classes in Cello and Chamber Music, given by the internationally renowned cellist and teacher Mihai Dancila (Quartetto Stradivari, Quartetto Beethoven di Roma).

On Thursday 24th June the University of Ulster and the newly formed Northern Ireland Regional Centre of ESTA (UK) will present a day of Master Classes for Cellists at Magee Campus, Derry.

Between the 25th and 27th of June 2010, the Donegal Chamber Music Society with support from Co. Donegal VEC Music Education Partnership and the Regional Cultural Centre, will present the second edition of ’Cello Meeting Ireland’. The weekend, based at the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, will feature master classes in Cello and Chamber Music, given by the internationally renowned cellist and teacher Mihai Dancila. ‘Cello Meeting Ireland’ will give participants the opportunity to have one-on-one tuition from this renowned musician and to attend a variety of musical events happening over the weekend.

The master classes will be complemented by concerts given by participants and by a final concert given by Mihai Dancila with the Donegal Chamber Orchestra and weekend participants.

MASTERCLASSES: CELLO & CHAMBER MUSIC

Participants in the master classes are divided into two categories Active and Observer.


The number of participants is at the discretion of the teacher and, if necessary, a selection will be made (based on first-come-first-served). Those who are not accepted as active participants can attend as observers.


CELLO MASTER CLASSES


Active Fee: € 100

Includes:

* 2 individual master classes with Mihai Dancila of 45 minutes duration each.
* Free admission to all concerts.
* Access to additional rehearsals.
* Opportunity to be selected to perform in one of the Concerts during the Festival.



CHAMBER MUSIC MASTER CLASSES


Active Fee: € 80 each member of the group (example: String Quartet € 320)

If you are already a member of a chamber group, such as a Piano Trio, String Quartet, Piano Quartet, etc., the group can avail of the chamber music master classes with Mihai Dancila.

Includes:

* 2 Chamber music master classes during the weekend of 1 hour duration each.
* Free admission to all concerts.
* Access to additional rehearsals.
* Opportunity to be selected to perform in one of the Concerts during the Festival.



Please note: chamber groups will not be formed at the festival by the organizers.


You can only avail of these master classes as a group.


Observer Fee: € 50


Includes:

* Entry to observe cello and chamber music master classes
* Free admission to all concerts.
* Access to additional rehearsals.

MIHAI DANCILA

Born in Cluj - Romania, Mr. Dancila received his musical training in the School of Music of his native city and completed his studies in the National Academy of Music in Bucharest where he graduated. He studied the cello with J. Szekely, G.Yarosevitch and J. Bonis.



Mr. Dancila's concert career began during his studies and he performed as soloist and as chamber music player in some of the most prestigious concert halls such as: La Scala - Milano, Berlin Philharmonie, Opera House - Sydney, Suntory Hall - Tokyo, Concertgebouw - Amsterdam, Teatro Colon - Buenos Aires, etc.



Since 1968 he was the cellist and founder member of "Academica" String Quartet with whom he was prizewinner at the International Competitions in Liege, Belgrade, Munich and Geneva. With this group he has toured throughout Europe, USA, Canada and Far East and he has recorded extensively for many European and U.S. Radio and Television networks. For almost nine years (1978-1986) appointed by RTE, his quartet known as RTE “Academica” String Quartet recorded and performed regularly within RTE`s concert seasons. During this period the quartet lived in Cork and its members were granted the Irish citizenship.



He has also recorded several LP and CD for Decca, Dynamic, Schwan-Harmonia Mundi, UNICEF and Denon. He was also principal cellist and soloist of the Italian chamber music group “I Solisti Italiani”, ensemble with he toured worldwide and recorded for Denon. He participates frequently at important International Music Festivals, where he collaborates with some of the most prestigious contemporary musicians: M. Pressler, S. Accardo, P.Schidlof, B.Giuranna, R. Stoltzman, P. Romero, B. Canino, F. Petracchi, M. Portal, A. Pay, L. Kavakos, A. Meunier, R. Kussmaul, R. Filippini, Bartok Quartet, Orlando Quartet, etc.



Since 1986 he is the cellist of the "Quartetto Beethoven" di Roma (piano quartet) with whom he repeatedly performed in concert tours in Europe, U.S.A, Canada, Australia and South America. With "Quartetto Beethoven" he has recorded all the piano quartets by Brahms, Fauré and Schumann for Dynamic - Genova and for UNICEF.


Mihai Dancila is also the cellist and founder member of the Quartetto Stradivari. Since its debut, in 1994, the Quartetto Stradivari has had significant success and gained a considerable reputation; this has led the Quartetto to be frequent guests at numerous Concert Societies and many International Music Festivals where they have been extremely well received by audiences and critics alike.

Beside his performing career Mr. Dancila has as well an intensive teaching activity: after his graduation he has thought at the Academy of Music in Bucharest, at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, Scuola di alto perfezionamento musicale di Saluzzo and Accademia Europea di Musica di Erba-Como in Italy; between 2006 and 2007 he was Cello teacher and Course Director of the Master of Arts in Classical String Performance Course at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance of the University of Limerick. He has held numerous Master Classes in Italy, Spain, Holland, China, France, Ireland, Japan and he was jury member in various International Music Competitions such as " Concorso Internazionale Trienale di Liuteria " Cremona, Concorso Internazionale "Rovere d`Oro"- Italy, International Chamber Music Competition "Lorenzi" in Trieste, International String Quartet Competition in Evian-France, etc.

Szabó-Yélamo Concert Series at the Regional Cultural Centre

April Concert


Following a very successful inaugural concert last February, the Donegal Chamber Music Society and the Regional Cultural Centre continues presenting Classical Music through the Szabó-Yélamo Concert Series in April. The inaugural concert has brought a variety of gifted classical music players to the community of Donegal, with established and up-and-coming talents on display. For this second performance the series will present the “VEC String Teacher’s Ensemble” wit works for different string ensembles by Mozart, Borodin and Rossini on Saturday 17th of April at 8pm.


The String Duo comprised of the Hungarian violinist Orsolya Szabó-Yélamo and the Spanish cellist Víctor Yélamo. Both are professional musicians and principal members of the Spanish String Orchestra Concerto Málaga, and are extensively involved in music education across the Northwest. For the 17th April Concert the duo will be joined on stage by Slovakian violinist Lucia Spacirova and local double bass player Michael McGinty, bringing an International Flavour to the audience. All the players are involved in music education in County Donegal and they teach at Co. Donegal VEC Music Education Partnership who also supports this new concert series.

Szabó-Yélamo Concert Series at the Regional Cultural Centre

Inaugural Concert

Donegal Chamber Music Society and the Regional Cultural Centre present the Szabó-Yélamo String Duo Concert Series. This Chamber Music Concert Series, with support from Co. Donegal VEC Music Education Partnership, is designed specially for Classical Music Lovers across the Northwest. The inaugural concert will be held next Friday 26th of February at 8pm at the Regional Cultural Centre Letterkenny.

The Szabó-Yélamo String Duo was founded in 2006 when its members were completing a Masters in Classical String Performance at the University of Limerick. The wife and husband duo is comprised of the Hungarian violinist Orsolya Szabó-Yélamo and the Spanish cellist Víctor Yélamo. Both are professional musicians and principal members of the Concerto Málaga Chamber Orchestra Spain and are extensively involved in music education in Donegal.

The inaugural concert will feature a presentation of the Duo's new project the Letterkenny Children Orchestra and the acclaimed Donegal Chamber Orchestra. The programme will include music by Bach, Stamitz, Sibelius and Elgar. It is the first in a series of Szabó-Yélamo String Duo concerts in collaboration with local and international classical musicians that will take place at the Regional Cultural Centre during 2010.
